My boyhood friend John Fresques and I used to take the bus down to the C&S Rice Yards to photograph some of the last remaining steam locomotives in the US. The railroad employees were all very supportive. The first thing we did was check in with the supervisor at the roundhouse to find out where the locomotives would be operating that day. However, we had to watch very carefully for the railroad detectives, who didn't like us at all! I was 15 when I started taking pictures in Denver's railroad yards. Switching duties were usually handled by the smaller 2-8-0 600-class locomotives. However, 807 and 809 were used quite a lot during 1958. These photos were mostly taken that year, with exception of the photos of 634, which were taken during January of 1959
