I joined the Navy in September, 1960 and somewhere around the first of January, 1961, I was assigned to the USS Los Angeles, docked in Long Beach. It just so happened that the last line of what was once the Pacific Electric Railway - the world's largest and most complete electric transit system - was nearing the last day of operation. A pal on the ship was a 'juice fan' and we took rides up to the station in the Pacific Electric Building at 6th and Main streets in Los Angeles. One night, we took the last car of the night up to the 6th and Main terminal, and the motorman let my friend - his name was Paul Gordenev - pilot the car the entire trip. We then slept all night in the car, left parked at the station, curled up in the wide seats. We were awakened in the morning by an irate PE employee!
