During the summer of 1957, I visited California for the first time. Dad took my sister Leslie and I to San Francisco on the "Overland:" a Union Pacific train that ran from Denver, Colorado to Ogden, Utah. In Ogden, the pullman car that we were riding in was switched to the Southern Pacific's "Overland Limited" train, and all the next day I stood in the vestibule and watch the countryside and the comings and goings of the railroad. It was the most exciting, inspiring and interesting trip so far up to that point of my life. The train finally arrived in Oakland and the passengers were all escorted onto the Southern Pacific's ferryboat "Berkeley" for the ride across the bay to beautiful San Francisco, where I rode around town on the streetcar and cablecar lines. That night, a friend of Dad picked us up and took us to his beautiful home on Angel Island where from his big panoramic plate-glass window that overlooked the bay, I saw the sun setting on the Northernwestern Pacific's yards in Tiburon. Dad's friend, Hiram, took us to Sam's in Tiburon for dinner and I wondered over into the yards and got pictures. Our next leg of the trip would be down the coast on the country's most scenic train, the "Coast Daylight." I continued to fall in love with California and vowed one day to move there (And that I did).
