June 16, 1958 was a special day for me. I had just turned 16 years old and Grandma Robertson had put me and my cousin Sally Ann on school trip to Europe led by a great lady who taught at Grayland School in Denver - Mrs. Ruth Gorham. I would fly to Montreal, Canada, and their take the Empress of Britain to Liverpool. We had one day to look around Montreal. I choose to seek out the railroads. First I rode some of the local cars of the Montreal street railway system, then an interurban car out to the town of Lachine. As the car sped along its track on the outskirts of town, I spotted the railroad yards of the Canadian National and the Canadian Pacific running parallel to the interurban track and on the return trip, I got off the car at a station near the yards, and took off for the roundhouses and engine facilities to take pictures of some of the last remaining steam locomotives in North America. Montreal's streetcars will make their final run in just 14 months.
