This fabulous church, Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont (English), located in the 5th Arrondissmont, contains the shrine of St. Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris and the tombs of Blaise Pascal and Jean Racine. Jean-Paul Marat is buried in the church's cemetery. The sculpted tympanum, " The Stoning of Saint Stephen," is the work of French sculptor Gabriel-Jules Thomas.
What drew us here was the fact that the great composer and improviser, Maurice Duruflé (English), held the post of Titular Organist at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont from 1929 until his death in 1986. Duruflé's great Requiem (English) is one of the greatest musical treasures of the 20th century. The fabulous organ is a product of Cliquot (1777) and Cavaillé Coll (1863) .
Listen to the Introit from the Duruflé Requiem.
