The Broekmans & van Poppel music store next to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Founded by Mr. Van Poppel, and Mr. Broekmans in 1914. Currently Broekmans & Van Poppel occupies two large stores in two cities, Amsterdam and Utrecht. I captured this photo journey of the two floors of the Amsterdam store in 2009. Already by that date, classical CDs were no longer available in stores of many US cities, let alone the kind and quality of recordings made in Europe and carefully displayed in this store. The top floor contains recorded music, both CD and DVD, and the bottom floor is dedicated to scores and books about music, written in a number of languages, and all carefully selected by the caring buying staff. Our important classical music tradition, before the onslaught of modernism during the 20th century, is one of our most important cultural assets that we must cultivate, preserve, and pass onto our younger generations, as is being accomplished in Holland today.
