"I loved writing as a child, and in the 4th grade I wrote "The Story of Dr. Goofy" that filled a dozen or more small spiral notebooks. When confronted with boring 7th-grade English, however, I lost interest in writing altogether, and thus I remained until Dad sent me away to the Navy, where I discovered James Joyce and Thomas Wolfe, and where I realized that I was a composer and a writer."
